Success…

I truly believe this…

“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.”

A Date That Will Live in Infamy…

Posted by Dave Mark on Sep 11, 2009 in News, Personal

First off, happy birthday to my Mom and to Chris Bowles.

Speaking of birthdays, on of my twitter friends, Angelo DiPaolo, was born on December 7th. We were commiserating on the famous birthdays and I was reminded of Roosevelt’s famous “Infamy” speech. Back on December 8th, 1947, the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt gave a six and a half minute speech that would be remembered for a most famous phrase, describing the previous day as a “date that will live in infamy.”

I think of that speech every September 11th. If you are interested in a bit of history, here’s a link to the wiki page dedicated to the speech, and here’s a link to a terrific article about the speech that includes photos of Roosevelt’s draft of the speech. Fascinating stuff.

Happy Birthday, Mom! (You too, Chris)…

New York, New York…

Posted by Dave Mark on Aug 17, 2009 in Personal, Travel

What a great trip! Kelley and I did a lot of shopping, eating, and walking. The highlights? Here are a few:

  • A walking tour around Ground Zero, including the Fire Station immediately across the street. The work is coming along. Last time I was there, the site was a scene of devastation. Now it looks like a massive construction site. Plans of the new memorial are plastered on walls. Looks like it will be beautiful. I am looking forward to seeing this unfold.
  • After our Ground Zero tour, we walked over to the ferry stop that looked across the water at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. An inspiring vista. We already have plans to visit both in the near future.
  • We walked from the ferry to Greenwich Village and Soho for some massive window shopping and some excellent pastries, pizza, etc.
  • Saturday evening was a quick bite to eat and then “The 39 Steps” at the Helen Hays Theater. I would strongly recommend this play to any fans of either Hitchcock or Monty Python. Somehow, this play captured the essence of both. Hilarious play, brilliant performances.
  • Sunday was a leisurely breakfast, then a walk up to the Museum of Modern Art on West 53rd. This is one of my favorite museums in the world. There was an amazing exhibit on the origins of punk, filled with audio and video memorabilia, none of which I’d ever seen before. Remarkable.

Can’t wait ’til our next visit…

Ant on my Computer…

Posted by Dave Mark on Jul 13, 2009 in Personal, photography

Was sitting out on the back porch working, when this tenacious ant decided to make the treacherous climb up the side of my laptop screen:

Computer Ant

Wish the ant was more in focus. He was just moving too quickly. I kind of like his attitude. As if he was looking over the edge, thinking “I can’t believe I did that!”…

Another interesting pic, taken with the long lens:

Flower

This is a flower that grew out of some kudzu growing out of the side of the bank of a canal…
