My brother, Stu, put together this video for one of the tracks off his band’s first release (cousin Mark is part of the band, too). If you would so indulge me, put on some headphones and watch the vid. I find the music great to program by and the video kind of trippy. An excellent effort by Stu and Mark, together known as Autostar. If you like the track, you can find it on iTunes by clicking this link…

Friend of the blog Leisa O’Malley turned me on to Fret Killer, a regular YouTube poster who posts a series of wonderful guitar and vocal takes on some old classics. They are perfectly arranged and executed. The only complaint I have is that he has embedding disabled so I can’t include the actual videos on my blog. Usually, I’d just pass them by, but these were worth sharing, so here’s a few links to get you started.
My personal favorite is Take Me Home, Country Roads. I used to perform this at coffee houses back in the day. Great song.
And the one Leisa started me off with is the classic among classics, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
Fret Killer, please enable embedding!!!

The band Phish has a longstanding tradition where they pick one album from a list of 99 of their favorite and cover that album live, on stage, on Halloween night. That is already quite excellent but, if you didn’t happen to be in Indio, California Halloween night, the mashup of those 99 albums by remixers extraordinaire Eclectic Method will have to do. And do it does.
Here’s a link to a page with the complete album list and all the details. And the video is below. Enjoy!

My brother Stu turned me on to a terrific repository of live performances. While YouTube is a great place to find and watch videos of your favorite artists, Wolfgang’s Vault offers a slightly different and more focused experience. For starters, you can search for a specific artist, select from a list of concerts by that artist, then play the concert from a playlist that you can control, a la iTunes. Here’s a playlist from the Allman Brothers 1973 Winterland concert:

Even better, the Vault offers a download manager that will download concerts as live individual tracks and fold those tracks into your iTunes library for later consumption. There’s also a free iPhone app so you can bring this lovely stuff on the road with you. Thanks, Wolfgang…

Check this, it’s brilliant. From my brother’s blog…

This is truly amazing. Watch the video, but let go of the visual image and imagine a rainstorm. Once the song starts, feel free to skip to the end for just a tiny bit more storm…

I love this story. Alec Duffy won a contest. The prize? Ownership of a brand new (at the time, 2007) Sufjan Stevens song. If you don’t know Sufjan Stevens, check out the song Chicago, one of my favorites.
Anyway, the thinking of the music community, the contest organizers, and of Mr. Stevens himself was that Duffy would upload the song to the net. But nope. Mr. Duffy, as is his right, only plays the song if you come to his apartment. He does not charge for the privilege. Absolutely brilliant!
Here’s a link to the WSJ story. Nice. See you all in Brooklyn…

This site is simply amazing. Thanks for the pointer, Stu.
